Maps : between distorted time and sheer madness, an afternoon with Cathy Haynes

Walter Benjamin famously outlined the idea ‘of setting out the sphere of life biographically on a map’.
We have been honored to spend an afternoon with Cathy Haynes for a critical wandering along contemporary and historical maps of life. She discussed her current cartographic researches as well as presented collectively drawn life maps, in collaboration with the students of the Rietveld Academy and together we navigated across its unexplored territories.
Cathy is a freelance curator, writer and artist. Building on her exhibition No Such Place (see Past, below), she is currently researching a history of official maps that contain an element of deliberate fiction: a secret code, a hidden message, a fake entity. Cathy is also a founder faculty member of The School of Life (freelance since 2008), where she teaches on creativity, and leads experimental walking tours and events.
