And How Are You Otherwise?

On some days chance meetings on the street just don't seem right. You vaguely recognize the faces, you try to recall their names. As the conversation hardly takes off, a lot goes on in your mind. Implicit, codified idioms – hesitating between a handshake or a kiss on the cheek. Am I smiling too much – shall I part my hair behind? And how should I begin?
Thoughts are suddenly disrupted by the awareness of a body in space, a talking body with staring eyes. Then you know you have to watch over yourself and the way you act, at least the way you communicate. Language clashes and suddenly it feels as if you are answering a professional phone call in pajamas. Social conventions emerge and you should know who you are, at least who you want to be. Some say truth is overrated – but we are so done with gossip.
A lot could be discussed during our random street encounter: the ever-faltering consciousness of the self, our standardized reactions to immovable social schemes, comforting behaviors, the weather. And how are you otherwise?
