Jennifer Teets and Paolo Thorsen-Nagel

A night of symbol ingestion and inroads into the illusory fabrics of contemporary life.

Jennifer Teets will impart a lecture punctuated by the serving of an ionized cocktail and an iconic sign patisserie, sitting on a napkin edition graciously crafted by artist Nicholas Hatfull. A concert follows in three parts performed by musician Paolo Thorsen-Nagel.

is a constant

a time that changes constantly

that goes through many effects

one step, down half

will sound through many, drifts away

in manner and speed, in three parts.

(Paolo Thorsen-Nagel)

Since the mid 2000's curator and writer Jennifer Teets has built a theory of "machinic divination" on the basis of Jesuit scientist Athanasius Kircher's culture of sprezzatura or "the art of acting deviously." Her research treats a body of unrealized machines from the 16th century as a portal to an individual/family machinic world of the future where invisible components rely on languages of situational thinking. She recently hosted a dinner/exhibition titled THE WORLD IS BOUND IN SECRET KNOTS at a private residence in Rome in January 2012 (co-sponsored by qwatz and Fondazione Giuliani) where Paolo Thorsen-Nagel and Nicholas Hatfull contributed performances and works alongside Marco Bruzzone, Jonathan Bywater, Lorenzo Cirrincione, Darius Miksys, Jurgen Ots, Tania Pérez Córdova and Aaron Schuster. She lives and works in Paris.

Paolo Thorsen-Nagel is a German-American guitarist and composer, currently based in Basel, Switzerland. He plays and composes for the Paolo Thorsen Projekt, which can be described as contemporary jazz with influences ranging from minimal music and song structures to classical and chamber sounds. For Mystics, Thorsen-Nagel’s solo project, he uses loops and delays to build atmospheric soundscapes, addressing the question of mechanical reproduction (through the repeating loops) and impermanence (through the improvised nature of the performances). Future projects in 2012 include a studio production with the Paolo Thorsen Projekt and a recording with experimental rock band Aie Ca Gicle. As a solo artist and collaborator, Thorsen-Nagel has performed at Art Basel 2011, New Jerseyy, Basel; Fondazione Giuliani, Roma; Kunsthall Charlottenborg, Kopenhagen; Rote Fabrik, Zurich; Collector Days 2011, Hotel Castell; Jazzfestival, Basel. In 2010 he was awarded the residency program ‘Casa Zia Lina' in Elba, Italy. For more information, see: www.paolothorsennagel.com

Nicholas Hatfull lives and works in Rome and London. He recently presented a solo exhibition, Il Bagno at Peles Empire, London. For more information, see: www.nicholashatfull.com
